Blackle

This falls into the, “O, come on people!” category.
I am all for the “green” trend and I sincerely hopw it’s not a trend, but a new way of life for many.
But really, claiming that Google is the big energy hog instead of your imported foods, bottle water and air-conditioner is a crock of doo-hockey.
What I’m talking about is a new version of the popular Google search engine (not affiliated with Google) that uses a black screen instead of a white one and claims to save, not a little, but a lot of energy. 15 watts per hits.
This just ain’t so. It does not matter what your screen displays; what matters is your power rating on your monitor and computer. (And both have improved greatly in recent years.) LCD screens use less power then the old CRTs. In fact, LCD monitors in many cases will actually use less energy displaying an all - white page than an all - black one.
But, folks, we are talking about grains of sand here. If you really want to make an energy difference and the conserve fossil fuels; walk instead of drive, don’t buy bottle water, and buy locally grow food. But since it is much easier to type in www.blackle.com then to go without mangos or tomatoes in winter, very few of you reading this will make that choice.
You will use blackle and feel you are “doing something for the environment.” It’s just not so.
